Actors who played Doctor Who
December 5, 2008
In one form or another, Doctor Who has been entertaining British television viewers since 1963. The show follows the adventures of an alien time traveler known as “The Doctor,” whose ship (the TARDIS) appears, from the outside, to be a police call box from the 1950s.
The original series ran from 1963 to 1989. After several failed efforts to bring the show back, a 2005 revival has been a big success, and the new incarnation is among the BBC’s most popular offerings.
To cover 45 years, you’re probably going to need more than one Doctor on call. In this case, 10 actors have played the role of the time traveler who battles aliens and rights wrongs.
Here’s the list:
1. William Hartnell (1963-66, deceased)
2. Patrick Troughton (1966-69, deceased)
3. Jon Pertwee (1970-74, deceased)
4. Tom Baker (1974-81)
5. Peter Davidson (1981-84)
6. Colin Baker (1984-86)
7. Sylvester McCoy (1987-89)
8. Paul McGann (1996)
9. Christopher Eccleston (2005)
10. David Tennant (2005-present)
