Benefitting from the sheer size of Azteca Stadium, 112,376 people crammed in to watch a meaningless battle between two Texas teams, a gate surely hyped by the Cowboys’ immense popularity south of the border.

Exhibition or not, that turnout still stands as the NFL record. Here’s a list of the top 10 attendance figures in league history, which includes just seven games played on U.S. soil:

112,376: Aug. 15, 1994: American Bowl (Azteca Stadium, Mexico City) – Cowboys vs. Oilers

106,424: Aug. 17, 1998: American Bowl (Azteca Stadium, Mexico City) — Cowboys vs. Patriots

105,840: Aug. 22, 1947: College All-Star Game (Soldier Field, Chicago) — Bears vs. All-Stars

105,121: Sept. 20, 2009: New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas)*

104,629: Aug. 4, 1997: American Bowl (Estadio Guillermo Canedo, Mexico City) — Broncos vs. Dolphins

103,985: Jan. 20, 1980: Super Bowl XIV (Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Calif.) — Steelers vs. Rams

103,667: Jan. 30, 1983: Super Bowl XVII (Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Calif.) — Redskins vs. Dolphins

103,467: Oct. 2, 2005: Regular Season (Azteca Stadium, Mexico City) — 49ers at Cardinals

103,438: Jan. 9, 1977: Super Bowl XI (Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Calif.) — Raiders vs. Vikings

102,368: Nov. 10, 1957: Regular Season (L.A. Coliseum, Los Angeles, Calif.) — 49ers at Rams

* Largest regular season crowd ever

Many hate ‘em. But few NFL fans are neutral on the subject of the Dallas Cowboys.

Sure, they haven’t won a playoff game since 1996, and at least part of the circus left town when Terrell Owens shuffled off to Buffalo, but Jerry Jones’ team is still the league’s top TV draw and greatest attention magnet. Moving into a brand new $1.2 billion stadium this season should only serve to enhance the brand. (Jones certainly hopes so, since he’s on the hook for the lion’s share of that tab.)

But what of the games, you ask? Yes, they’re part of the package as well. Here’s a look at Dallas’ 2009 schedule, a 17-week adventure sure to produce its share of ups and downs. (Home games are in all caps.)

Making the playoffs is fun. Losing once you get there isn’t.

The NFL has most of the big earners, but a different game is No. 1

Soccer may still struggle to gain a spot in the American sports consciousness, but the game is big business just about everywhere else in the world. That’s why a soccer (er, football) club tops Forbes‘ list of the “10 Most Valuable Teams in Sports,” and why two others make the Top 10.

Fear not, fans of the staid old National Football League. No fewer than six of your favorites made the cut, compared to just one entry from Major League Baseball. (We’ll give you one guess who that might be…)

Here’s the rundown, with current estimated worth:

1. Manchester United (soccer): $1.8 billion

The holiday tradition has produced plenty of noteworthy moments — both good and bad, from the Dallas point of view.

The Mad Bomber. A state championship battle with the Oilers. Leon Lett. Jason Garrett.

Here’s a totally arbitrary look at the most memorable Thanksgiving Day games at the stadium with the hole in the roof:

1974 — Dallas 24, Washington 23: With Roger Staubach sidelined, Clint Longley connected with Drew Pearson for a late 50-yard touchdown to steal one from the hated Redskins.

1979 — Houston 30, Dallas 24: Remember the Oilers? Fans at Texas Stadium that day were treated to a real Texas Shootout as Earl Campbell ran for 195 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

1987 – Minnesota 44, Dallas 38 (OT): Not exactly a stellar season overall, but this game was particularly heartbreaking for the locals. The Cowboys tied it with two late touchdown passes from Danny White to Mike Renfro, but all was for naught as the Vikings came back to win in the extra period.

1993 — Miami 16, Dallas 14: On a day that otherwise would have been remembered for snow, ice, and a close Cowboys win, Leon Lett’s ill-fated decision to try to pick up a blocked field goal allowed the Dolphins to seize the (chilly) day on a second-chance chip shot.

1994 — Dallas 42, Green Bay 31: In an emergency start in place of the injured Troy Aikman, Jason Garrett threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns.

2006 — Dallas 38, Tampa Bay 10: Not a great game, but significant for Tony Romo’s five touchdown passes, a national coming-out party that augured a new sheriff in town.
