NFL ties since 1974
November 17, 2008
When the Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals played to a 13-13 tie on Nov. 16 in Cincinnati, it was a rare outcome for an NFL game: Since 1974, when the league went to an extra 15-minute period in attempt to break ties, only 17 games have failed to produce a winner before the end of the overtime period.
Prior to that, games were declared a tie if neither team had more points after the regulation 60 minutes of play. The change made for the ‘74 season created those 15 additional minutes in which the first team to score was the winner in “sudden death.” Before Sunday, the league had gone just more than six years without seeing a game end without a verdict.
Here’s the list of the 17 NFL games that have ended in a tie since 1974:
Pittsburgh 35, Denver 35: September 22, 1974
