AFI Top Sports Movies

Some tugged at the heartstrings. Others touched a nerve with the public. Some created legends, while others honored real-life heroes. A few made careers or showed audiences a different side of an already bankable star.

Picking the Top 10 sports movies of all time couldn’t have been an enviable task, but the American Film Institute recently did just that as part of honoring similarly well-regarded flims in other genres. The list was pared down from an original compilation of 50 nominees. Ballots were then distributed to more than 1,500 creative artists, critics and historians whose votes produced the distinguished 10.

Here’s what they came up with:

3. The Pride of the Yankees (1943)

4. Hoosiers (1986)

5. Bull Durham (1988)

6. The Hustler (1961)

7. Caddyshack (1980)

8. Breaking Away (1979)

9. National Velvet (1945)

10. Jerry Maguire (1996)
