Mysterious monoliths, an evil Empire, a lovable visitor from another planet, a crazy scientist in a DeLorean…

Science fiction stretches the human imagination and makes us wonder what really might be out there. When the American Film Institute set out the determine its Top 10 Science Fiction Films of all time, narrowing the list down from a ballot of 50 was no easy task.

Here’s what the voters came up with:

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

2. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

3. E.T. - The Extraterrestrial (1982)

4. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

5. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

6. Bladerunner (1982)

7. Alien (1979)

8. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

9. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

10. Back to the Future (1985)
