No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Texas will play for the national championship

The final Bowl Championship Series standings were released on Dec. 6, matching No. 1 Alabama against No. 2 Texas in the national championship game Jan. 7 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

Alabama moved up a notch after an emphatic win over Florida in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Texas, however, needed a last-second field goal to stave off an upset bid by Nebraska in the Big 12 title game. The Longhorns still finished comfortably ahead of No. 3 Cincinnati in the last BCS poll.

BCS rankings combine the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Harris Interactive poll, and the average of six computer rankings.

Here’s how it works, courtesy of USA Today:

“To derive a team’s poll percentages in the Harris Interactive and USA TODAY polls, each team’s point total is divided by a maximum 2850 possible points in the Harris Interactive Poll and 1575 possible points in the USA TODAY Poll.

“Teams are assigned an inverse point total (25 for #1, 24 for #2, etc.) for each of their respective computer poll rankings to determine the overall computer component. The highest and lowest ranking for each team is dropped, and the sum total of the remaining four rankings is divided by 100 (the maximum possible points). This figure produces a Computer Rankings Percentage. The six computer ranking providers are Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin and Peter Wolfe. Each computer ranking accounts for schedule strength within its formula.

“The BCS Average is calculated by averaging the percent totals of the Harris Interactive and USA TODAY Polls, and Computer rankings. The highest BCS Average receives the #1 ranking, the second highest receives #2, and so forth.”

Here are the Top 10:

1. Alabama — .9978
2. Texas — .9433
3. Cincinnati — .8878
4. TCU — .8836
5. Florida — .8637
6. Boise State– .8106
7. Oregon– .7568
8. Ohio State– .6568
9. Georgia Tech– .6471
10. Iowa — .6180

OU’s two-week reign served to break a tie with Notre Dame and leave the school with the most weeks at No. 1 in the history of the poll.

Here’s the Top 10, a virtual Who’s Who of big time college football, through games of Dec. 5:

1. Oklahoma: 97
2. Notre Dame: 95
3. Ohio State: 93
4. USC: 90
5. Nebraska: 70
6. Miami (FL): 68
7. Florida State: 59
8. Texas: 45

In the history of the Associated Press college football poll, which dates back to 1936, no one’s name has come up more often than Michigan. Midway through the 2008 season, the Wolverines had cracked the poll an impressive 752 times.

Here’s a list of the schools who’ve most consistently maintained good company, through Nov. 22, 2008:

1. Michigan: 752
2. Ohio State: 750
3. Notre Dame: 705
4. Oklahoma: 675
5. USC: 670
6. Texas: 654
7. Nebraska: 642
8. Alabama: 625
9. Tennessee: 562
10. Penn State: 558
