Places to see while you can
December 22, 2008
Some of the most interesting places in the world have a shelf life. Whether they’re old, fallen into disrepair, or deemed inadequate by their current owners, many are in danger of disappearing before too much longer.
Frommer’s has a list of “11 Places to See Before They Disappear.”
Here’s a sampling, with the main reason they may be on the way out:
– Babylon: War and development
– Fenway Park: Age, limited capacity
– Gu Gong (The Forbidden City): Old age and heavy traffic
– Taj Mahal: Crowds, air pollution
– The Galapagos Islands: Tourists, population growth, invasive species.
– The Pyramids of Giza: Unrestricted development and urban sprawl.
– Versailles: Damage to gardens from 1999 winter storms.
To see the rest, and to read about all of them, visit Frommer’s.
