NCAA No. 1 seeds
March 13, 2009
It’s more about pride and prestige than anything else, but grabbing one of the four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament is a feather in any school’s cap.
This year, Louisville was rated the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament and was placed as the top seed in the Midwest. The Cardinals were joined by North Carolina (South), Pittsburgh (East) and Connecticut (West).
Since 1979, there have been only two occasions (1980 and 2006) in which none of the top seeds advanced to the Final Four. A year ago, all four made it for the first time.
How have No. 1 seeds fared over the past 10 years?
Here’s the list of Final Four participants, with seeds, and eventual national champion in bold:
2008: Kansas (1), Memphis (1), North Carolina (1), UCLA (1)
2007: Florida (1), Ohio State (1), Georgetown (2), UCLA (2)
2006: UCLA (2), Florida (3), LSU (4), George Mason (11)
2005: North Carolina (1), Illinois (1), Louisville (4), Michigan State (5)
2004: Duke (1), Connecticut (2), Oklahoma State (2), Georgia Tech (3)
