Most Tour de France wins by country

While the United States ranks high on the list of countries with the most Tour de France victories, only two Americans — Lance Armstong (7) and Greg LeMond (3) — have actually won the event.

Historically, in fact, the hosts have been reluctant to part with the title: A Frenchman has taken the victorious ride into Paris twice as often as any other country has produced a winner.

Here’s a short list of nations with the most Tour wins, through Spaniard Alberto Contador’s 2009 victory:
