Most Tour de France wins
July 26, 2009
Spain’s Alberto Contador won his second Tour de France in 2009, but American Lance Armstrong remains the gold (or, dare we say, yellow) standard in the world’s most celebrated cycling event. Armstrong has the most career victories with seven, and making feat all the more impressive, he earned them in consecutive years.
Here’s a list of the riders who have finished first in Paris the most times:
7 — Lance Armstrong, United States (1999-2005)
5 — Jacques Anquetil, France (1957, 1961-64)
5 — Eddy Merckx, Belgium (1969-72, 1974)
5 — Bernard Hinault, France (1978-79, 1981-82, 1985)
5 — Miguel Indurain, Spain (1991-95)
3 — Philippe Thys, Belgium (1913-14, 1920)
3 — Louison Bobet, France (1953-55)
3 — Greg LeMond, United States (1986, 1989-90)
