Most expensive license plates

Can you imagine paying $40,000 for a 1921 Alaska automobile license plate? You probably could if you could envision it being worth $60,000 just eight years later. (That’s probably a lot better than your 401k is doing, eh?)

Turns out there’s money in those ancient tags. In the case of the Alaska plate, the value is enhanced by the fact that there are only four known to still be in existence.

Is there a potential payday collecting dust in your grandparents’ garage? Check out this Forbes list of the most expensive license plate around:

1913 North Carolina: $10,000

1906 Virginia: $12,000

1913 Idaho: $13,000

1905 Vermont: $15,000

1909 Delaware: $20,000

1906 West Virginia: $25,000

1922 Hawaii: $30,000

1912 Mississippi: $35,000

1913 Misssissippi: $50,000

1921 Alaska: $60,000

To read about all of these, and to take in a slideshow, visit Forbes.
