Biggest Oscar TV audiences
February 26, 2009
Okay, so maybe “Hollywood’s Biggest Night” wasn’t your cup of tea after all.
The Dark Knight and Iron Man weren’t deemed worthy of nominations in the top categories. (All they did was make lots and lots of money.) The films that received the most attention were ones few people actually saw. Heck, even dapper host Hugh Jackman admitted he hadn’t seen The Reader.
Historically, the Oscar telecast seems to do best when popular movies and stars are in the running. Here’s a list of the top Academy Awards TV audiences, the year in question, and which film ended up taking home the top prize:
1. 1998: 55.249 million (Titanic)
2. 1983: 53.235 million (Gandhi)
3. 1980: 48.978 million (Kramer vs. Kramer)
4. 1978: 48.501 million (Annie Hall)
5. 1995: 48.279 million (Forrest Gump)
6. 1975: 48.127 million (Godfather: Part II)
7. 1976: 46.751 million (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest)
8. 2000: 46.333 million (American Beauty)
9. 1979: 46.301 million (Deer Hunter)
10. 1982: 46.245 million (Chariots of Fire)
