2009 MTV Video Music Awards

If you want to liven up your awards show, don’t forget to invite Kanye West.

Famous for pouting over his own slights — real or imagined — West took his act to another level at the Sept. 13 MTV Video Music Awards when he crashed the stage to protest Taylor Swift’s win for Best Female Video, effectively claiming that Beyonce got robbed. While Swift maintained her composure and clearly had the audience on her side, West spent the rest of the evening being booed every time his name was mentioned.

While Kanye wasn’t dominating discussion, they gave out the awards, too. Here’s a list of the winners:

Video of the Year: Beyonce, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”

Best New Artist: Lady Gaga, “Poker Face”

Best Hip-Hop Video: Eminem, “We Made You”

Best Male Video: T.I. f/ Rihanna, “Live Your Life”

Best Video (That Should Have Won A Moonman): Beastie Boys, “Sabotage”

Breakthrough Video: Matt And Kim, “Lessons Learned”

Best Art Direction: Lady Gaga, “Paparazzi”

Best Choreography: Beyonce, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”

Best Cinematography: Green Day, “21 Guns”

Best Direction: Green Day, “21 Guns”

Best Editing: Beyonce, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”

Best Special Effects: Lady Gaga, “Paparazzi”
