Sci-Fi That Could Happen

When Arthur C. Clarke wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey in the 1960s, 2001 was a long way off. Now that the supposedly fateful year has come and gone, it’s interesting to look at just how much of Clarke’s vision of the “future” has been realized.

Humanity hasn’t been able to embark on long manned probes of the solar system. Getting around the neighborhood has been challenge enough. But satellites and space stations have become reality, and the technology the move into space spawned has greatly changed daily life.

What films fall into the realm of the plausible? Newsarama has a list of five.

Here goes:

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): A tale of deep space travel and the growing importance of computers isn’t as futuristic as it seemed.

The Truman Show (1998): Unwitting Jim Carrey’s daily life is beamed to billions. No way? Enter the reality show.

Gattaca (1997): Children’s genes pre-selected to deliver the most desirable traits.

Iron Man (2008): Tony Stark’s super suit isn’t available yet, but where there’s enough money, there’s probably a way.

Jurassic Park (1993): Dolly the sheep is no T-Rex, but the concept is no longer so far-fetched.
