Least Expensive Cars to Drive
October 16, 2008
If you’re a truck driving guy or an SUV-loving soccer mom, these are difficult times.
Gas prices have come down a bit, but they are still high. Getting to work or ferrying the kids to their various schools and activities eats up a big part of the average American budget.
Finding a less expensive vehicle is one option, but identifying real bargains can be a challenge. A car that gets good gas mileage might also lose much of its value during that first year on the road. Similarly, a vehicle that seems like a good alternative may be costly to insure. Reliability is a consideration, too.
Forbes recently attempted to identify the least expensive cars to drive over a five-year period, factoring in purchase price, fuel charges, depreciation, taxes, insurance and more.
Here’s what they came up with:
– Cadillac DTS (Luxury Sedan)
– Acura TSX (Upscale Sedan)
– Chrysler 300 (Large Sedan)
– Mitsubish Eclipse (Sporty/Sports Car)
– Mazda Miata (Convertible)
– Jeep Patriot (SUV)
– Toyota Prius (Hybrid)
– Hyundai Elantra (Family Sedan)
– Honda Fit (Hatchback)
– Toyota Yaris (Small Car)

I bought a used 1999 Miata with 155K miles about a year ago and have been extremely happy with the car. I paid just over $5K and bought it from the original owner.
I drive about 17 miles to work in about 25-30 minutes, getting 28-30 mpg. I fill it up every two weeks (if I don’t do a lot of other running around), putting in 8-10 gallons of gasoline.
Living in the Carolinas is the perfect climate for this car because of the mild winters that let me leave the top down all year. The intangible benefit is my improved frame of mind from the enjoyment I receive driving this car.
