American castles

While it may be true that a man’s home is his castle, most of don’t actually live in one.

A few fortunate Americans have done just that, however, and Forbes Traveler has located the castles in question. In its never-ending quest to document the odd, obscure, and downright weird, the publication has produced its list of “10 Amazing Castles of America,” many of which are now open to the public as museums or local attractions.

Curious?

Here goes:

Wing’s Castle, Millbrook, N.Y.

Coral Castle, Homestead, Fla.

Belcourt Castle, Newport, R.I.

Iolani Palace, Honolulu, Hawaii

Winterthur, WInterthur, Fla.

Hearst Castle, San Simeon, Calif.

Vikingsholm, Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Villa Zorayda, St. Augustine, Fla.

Gillette Castle, East Haddam, Conn.

Hempstead House/Castle Gould, Sands Point, N.Y.

To learn more about each of these offbeat outposts, and to see photos of each, visit Forbes Traveler.
