College basketball is all about breathless finishes, buzzer-beaters, pep bands, frenzied crowds and heated rivalries.

Oh, and money, too.

Sold out home schedules help, but the real cash pours in when your team makes a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Success brings out more folks wanting a piece of the action, many of them willing to donate money and pay premium prices for premium seats and perks.

Recently, Forbes set out to determine which schools had the most lucrative programs. The publication’s second annual ranking of the Most Valuable College Basketball Teams is based on how much cash the program brings to four areas: the university (including scholarship payments for basketball players); the athletic department (profit generated by the basketball program retained by the department); the conference (distribution of post-season tournament revenue); and local communities (estimated spending by visitors).

Here are the top 10:

1. North Carolina

Putting together a sustained run of excellence is quite another matter. As hard as it is to get there once or twice, consider the magnitude of UCLA’s unmatched streak of 10 consecutive trips to the game’s final weekend.

Who else has the most consecutive Final Four appearances?

Here’s the list:

10 – UCLA (1967-76)
5 – Cincinnati (1959-63)
5 – Duke (1988-92)
3 – Houston (1982-84)
3 – Kentucky (1996-98)
3 – Michigan State (1999-01)
3 – North Carolina (1967-69)
3 – Ohio State (1944-46)
3 – Ohio State (1960-62)
3 - San Francisco (1955-57)
3 – UCLA (2006-2008)

Who is the best of the best? Which player will end the season with a trip to New York to pick up the latest replica of that famous fellow flashing the stiffarm? Public relations directors at all the usual suspects are kept doubly busy when their school has a legitimate contender.

Not coincidentally, the schools with the most Heisman Trophy winners are also among college football’s most storied institutions. Success attracts talent, and more talent tends to bring more success.

Your leaders through the 2008 season:

7 – Southern California (Mike Garrett, 1965; O.J. Simpson, 1968; Charles White, 1979; Marcus Allen, 1981; Carson Palmer, 2002; Matt Leinart, 2004; Reggie Bush, 2005)
7 – Notre Dame (Angelo Bertelli, 1943; John Lujack, 1947; Leon Hart, 1949; John Lattner, 1953; Paul Hornung, 1956; John Huarte, 1964; Tim Brown, 1987)
7 - Ohio State (Les Horvath, 1944; Vic Janowicz, 1950; Howard Cassady, 1955; Archie Griffin, 1974 & ‘74; Eddie George, 1995, Troy Smith, 2006)
5 – Oklahoma (Billy Vessels, 1952; Steve Owens, 1969; Billy Sims, 1978; Jason White, 2003, Sam Bradford, 2008)
