The overall health of Americans remained static for a fourth year, according to the report, which weighs such factors as binge drinking, health insurance coverage, air pollution, infectious disease rates, crime levels and immunization coverage.

Southern states tended to fare poorly in the rankings, as the report claims the region has some of the highest rates of obesity, which contributes to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some types of cancer, as well as high rates of smoking, which causes cancer, lung disease, heart disease and other problems.

Here are the Bottom 10:

50. Louisiana

49. Mississippi

48. South Carolina

47. Tennessee

46. Texas

45. Florida

T43. Oklahoma

T43. Arkansas

Entire states are experiencing major shortfalls, too.

Big drops in tax revenue produce challenges for governments to fund essential services such as education, police and fire departments. Before Washington is done coming up with the cash to support corporate bailouts, state officials are likely to be coming to town, looking for help of their own.

According to BusinessWeek, 31 money-strapped states may be experiencing up to $53.4 billion in deficits, based on data compiled by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Here are the top 10, and how bad the balance sheet is looking:

– California: -$22.2 billion

– Arizona: -$2 billion

– Florida: -$5.1 billion

– Nevada: -$1.2 billion

– Rhode Island: -$430 million

– New York: -$5.5 billion

– Alabama: $784 million

– Georgia: -$1.8 billion

– New Jersey: $2.5 billion

– Maryland: $1.1 billion

Want to stay at a verifiably green hotel for your next vacation? Soon you’ll be able to choose from among dozens of hotel and resort projects, in various stages of construction or remodeling, that have registered with the US Green Building Council, aiming to achieve silver, gold or platinum LEED certification.

But so far only a handful of resorts, hotels and lodges, 13 at last count, have completed the LEED certification process. These get-aways, which include upscale, urban hotels; trendy spas and woodsy lodges, have met the LEED standards, which requires that building projects consider the environment in how they locate their structures; choose materials with a lighter environmental impact; recycle or reduce construction waste, and conserve energy and water.

The 13 green pioneers:

**LEED certification of building projects differs from the certification by the Green Hotels Association. While LEED focuses on construction and energy consumption; the GRE, which also looks at energy conservation, more closely analyzes daily operations, giving points for hotels that use bulk soaps, low-toxic cleaners, natural pesticides and less food packaging.

You know all about “The Big House” in Ann Arbor, “The Horseshoe” in Columbus, “The Swamp” in Florida and the Tennessee Navy docking for the big game in Knoxville. But who are the other top draws around the nation?

Here’s a list of the 2007 home attendance leaders, with average per game:

1. Michigan: 110,264

2. Penn State: 108,917

3. Ohio State: 105,110

4. Tennessee: 103,918

5. Georgia: 92,746

6. LSU: 92,619

7. Alabama: 92,138

8. Florida: 90,388

9. Southern California: 87,476

10. Texas: 85,144

Note: With the expansion of Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium to a capacity of more than 98,000 for 2008, UT is likely to move into the top five after numbers are crunched at the end of the current season.
