When something works on that living room screen, Hollywood types tend to draw one conclusion: Make it longer, larger, and charge people money to see it at the local multiplex.

Sometimes, bigger is better. The first Star Trek movie turned a failed 1960s TV series into a franchise that has spanned more than 40 years. Harrison Ford’s take on The Fugitive was pretty cool, too.

Often as not, however, something is lost in translation. What worked in a 30 or 60-minute format doesn’t always lend itself to a broader treatment. Sometimes, the outcome is downright embarrassing for all concerned.

Here’s a look at some of the more prominent conversions from TV to theater:
