If you are one of those college basketball fans who thinks the season begins in March and ends in late March/early April, you are not alone. The growth of the NCAA Tournament has made March Madness one of the highlights of the sports calendar, but that preoccupation with brackets has tended to make the regular season something of an afterthought.

These days, great seasons aren’t measured so much by conference championships or national rankings as they are by how your team fares in the Big Dance. For the major players, nothing less than a trip to the Final Four even begins to satisfy the fan base.

Who has ended up cutting the nets since the tournament began way back in 1939?

Here’s the list of NCAA men’s basketball champions:

1939: Oregon
1940: Indiana
1941: Wisconsin
1942: Stanford
1943: Wyoming
1944: Utah
1945: Oklahoma A & M
1946: Oklahoma A & M
1947: Holy Cross
1948: Kentucky
1949: Kentucky
1950: C.C.N.Y.
1951: Kentucky
1952: Kansas
1953: Indiana
1954: La Salle
1955: San Francisco
1956: San Francisco
1957: North Carolina
1958: Kentucky
1959: California
1960: Ohio State

When it comes to closing the deal, UCLA's Wooden laps the field

The Final Four has at least a little in common with the Academy Awards: Most seem to agree that it’s an honor just to be in the last cut of contenders, regardless of how it all turns out.

Of course, winning beats the heck out of just “being there,” and some coaches have enjoyed that one brief shining moment more than others. One, in fact, laps the field.

Who are the winningest Final Four coaches of all time?

Here’s the list, through the 2009 tournament:

10 — John Wooden, UCLA

4 — Adolph Rupp, Kentucky

3 — Bob Knight, Indiana

3 — Mike Krzyzewski, Duke

2 — Jim Calhoun, Connecticut

2 — Denny Crum, Louisville

2 — Billy Donovan, Florida

2 — Henry Iba, Oklahoma State

2 — Ed Jucker, Cincinnati

2 — Branch McCracken, Indiana

2 — Dean Smith, North Carolina

2 — Phil Woolpert, San Francisco

2 — Roy Williams, North Carolina

Here’s the list, with final margin:

49 — UCLA (109) vs. Wyoming, (60), Regional semifinal, 3-17-1967
47 — Duke (101) vs. Connecticut (54), Regional final, 3-14-1964

Success in March can generate big bucks for top programs

College basketball is all about breathless finishes, buzzer-beaters, pep bands, frenzied crowds and heated rivalries.

Oh, and money, too.

Sold out home schedules help, but the real cash pours in when your team makes a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Success brings out more folks wanting a piece of the action, many of them willing to donate money and pay premium prices for premium seats and perks.

Recently, Forbes set out to determine which schools had the most lucrative programs. The publication’s second annual ranking of the Most Valuable College Basketball Teams is based on how much cash the program brings to four areas: the university (including scholarship payments for basketball players); the athletic department (profit generated by the basketball program retained by the department); the conference (distribution of post-season tournament revenue); and local communities (estimated spending by visitors).

Here are the top 10:

1. North Carolina
