American Cities Feeling the Recession
October 6, 2008
Although there’s still some discussion over whether the United States is officially in a recession, the slowdown is already being felt in many cities. A New York Times article on Oct. 5 cites a report from Moody’s Economy.com that says about two thirds of the country’s 381 metropolitan areas are in a recession while still another one in five were at risk (see the map). The report also found areas that were growing, despite the overall economic woes.
Here’s a partial breakdown:
Areas in Recession:
- Atlanta
- Charlotte, N.C.
- Chicago
- Cleveland
- Detroit
- Kansas City
- Las Vegas
- Miami
- Nashville
- New Orleans
- Phoenix
- St. Louis
Areas at Risk for Recession:
- Baltimore
- New York City
- Minneapolis-St. Paul
- Orlando
- Salt Lake City
- San Diego
- San Francisco
Areas that Are Growing
- Boston
- Dallas/Fort Worth
- Denver
- Hartford, Conn.
- Houston
- Oklahoma City
- Raleigh, N.C.
- San Jose, Calif.
- Seattle
- Washington, D.C.
For a look at all cities and how they’re faring, see the maps at the New York Times.
