If you’re in New York City or Los Angeles, you might think America is getting pretty crowded. Try telling that to folks in less populous states, where there’s plenty of room to roam.

Which are the smallest U.S. states in terms of population? Here’s a list of the tiny 10:

1. Wyoming — 532,668
2. Vermont — 621,270
3. North Dakota – 641,481
4. Alaska – 686,293
5. South Dakota — 804,194

When April 15 nears, most Americans gather up paperwork, sharpen pencils, and sit down for a joust with those Internal Revenue Service forms we all know and love.

In most states, however, settling up with the IRS is just part of the fun. State taxes are a big part of the package, too, and some take a bigger bite than others.

Forbes has put together a list of states where Americans are taxed most. If you live in one of these, you probably won’t be surprised.

Here’s the top 10, with average tax burden per person:

7. Massachusetts: $2,953

Biggest NCAA first-round upsets

America loves the underdog, and nowhere is that affection more true than in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. After the seedings are set and the brackets filled out, favorites peek at the first-round pairings and cringe at the thought of a difficult match-up and an early ouster at the hands of some relative unknown.

To date, no No. 1 seed has lost to a No. 16. Move down a spot or two, however, and you can find no shortage of memorable upsets.

Healthiest U.S. states

For the second straight year, Vermont reigns as the healthiest state in America, according to a report issued by the United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association, and the Partnership for Prevention advocacy group.

In announcing its 19th annual findings, the group also cited Louisiana as the least healthy state, a distinction accorded Mississippi in 2007.

The overall health of Americans remained static for a fourth year, according to the report, which weighs such factors as binge drinking, health insurance coverage, air pollution, infectious disease rates, crime levels and immunization coverage.

Southern states tended to fare poorly in the rankings, as the report claims the region has some of the highest rates of obesity, which contributes to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some types of cancer, as well as high rates of smoking, which causes cancer, lung disease, heart disease and other problems.

Birth states of presidents

He was Governor of Texas, made his money in Texas, ran a baseball team in Texas, and is retiring to Texas. So, it stands to reason that George W. Bush is a Texan, right?

Uh…not exactly. While he may have spent plenty of time in the Lone Star State, Bush actually was born in New Haven, Conn. — the only president that state has produced to date.

Which states can claim to have provided the birthplace for the most U.S. chief executives?
