Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

If you were planning a tour of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World for your next summer vacation…don’t. Only one of them — the Egyptian Pyramids at Giza — have escaped the ravages of time. Earthquakes, fires, and just plain old age managed to do in the rest.

Small, uh, wonder. Inspired by mythology, religion and art, the seven generally agreed-upon projects that make up the group were built between 2700 B.C. and 270 B.C. Over the years, the list was expanded and trimmed, but the final seven eventually took shape sometime in the Middle Ages.

With six of the wonders lost and few drawings to go on, archaeologists have used various written accounts to take a stab at what the structures actually looked like. CNN put together this presentation in 1997. It’s a bit “retro” by Internet standards, but that also makes it kind of fun.

Here goes:

Pyramids of Egypt

Pharos of Alexandria

Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

Statue of Zeus

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

Colossus of Rhodes
