Not everyone has been doing Shakespeare, of course, but a few have been able to make their mark (not to mention a decent living) in the thespian world.

Here are just a few who have successfully transitioned:

Jim Brown: NFL running back/The Dirty Dozen

Chuck Connors: MLB/The Rifleman

Fred Dryer: NFL/Hunter

Rick Fox: NBA/Oz, Ugly Betty

Alex Karras: NFL/Blazing Saddles, Webster

Howie Long: NFL/Broken Arrow, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Malcolm in the Middle

Ed Marinaro: NFL/Hill Street Blues

Merlin Olsen: NFL/Father Murphy

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Body builder/Terminator series

O.J. Simpson: NFL/Naked Gun series

Bubba Smith: NFL/Police Academy

Bob Uecker: MLB/Major League series, Mr. Belvedere

Carl Weathers: NFL/Rocky series

Fred Williamson: NFL/blaxploitation films, Starsky and Hutch

That’s true in NASCAR or golf, where finishing in the Top 10 on a consistent basis can earn you a lot of cash, if not the greatest of reputations. It’s also true in Hollywood, where movies don’t have to hit the top of the charts to rake in tidy profits.

Boxofficemojo.com has put together a list of the top-grossing films that never made it to No. 1.

A quirky, violent Quentin Tarantino film may not be everyone’s piece of cake, but Pitt is coming off the success of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and the Academy Award nomination that accompanied it.

How bankable is Pitt?

Here’s a list of his top-grossing films to date:

1. Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005): $186,336,279
2. Ocean’s Eleven (2001): $183,417,150
3. Troy (2004): $133,378,256
4. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008): $127,509,326
5. Ocean’s Twelve (2004): $125,544,280
6. Ocean’s Thirteen (2007): $117,154,724
7. Interview with the Vampire (1994): $105,264,608
8. Seven (1995): $100,125,643

A strong first weekend sets the tone for a film's commercial success

While Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince turned in a remarkable opening weekend — grossing more than $158 million in U.S. box office alone — “weekend” has become open to interpretation in terms of movie-making one-upsmanship.

Normally, movies open on Friday, giving the film three days to rack up sales. Recently, however, anticipated blockbusters debut earlier in the week, skewing comparisons to titles going the more conventional route.

Prince, for instance, opened on a Wednesday and did much of its business in the first few days. Its Friday-Sunday haul of just over $77 million would rank it only 20th among the biggest summer debuts of all time.

Which movies hold the top spots?

Here’s the list, according to boxofficemojo.com.
